KYC, or Know Your Customer, is the verification every broker, depository participant and mutual fund must complete before you can invest. In India it means providing your PAN, Aadhaar, a bank account proof, a photograph and a signature, and often a short video or in-person verification. Once done, your details are stored with a KYC registration agency, so opening a second broker or fund account is faster. KYC exists to prevent money laundering and to make sure the person trading is the person named. Details must be kept current: a change of address, phone number or bank account should be updated, and SEBI periodically requires re-KYC, after which accounts with outdated details can be frozen. Never share your KYC documents or OTPs with tip sellers, account handlers or anyone who offers to trade on your behalf; that is a common route to fraud.
