An after-market order, or AMO, is an order you place when the exchange is closed, usually in the evening or early morning. The broker holds it and sends it to the exchange at the start of the next session, in the pre-open window or at market open depending on the broker. AMOs suit people who work during market hours and cannot watch screens from 9:15 to 3:30. For example, you decide at night to buy 10 shares of SBI at a limit price of ₹790 and place an AMO; the broker submits it the next morning. The risk is that overnight news can move the price, and a market AMO fills at whatever the opening price is. Most brokers set a time window for AMOs, so check yours. A limit AMO gives more control than a market AMO.
