India VIXNifty ka darr ka meter

NSE's volatility index showing the expected annualised movement in Nifty over the next 30 days, derived from Nifty option prices.

India VIX is NSE's volatility index. It is calculated from the prices of near-term Nifty options and expresses the market's expected annualised volatility for the coming 30 days. A VIX of 15 implies traders expect Nifty to move roughly 15% up or down over a year, which works out to about 4.3% over a month. VIX rises when fear rises: during sharp falls, before elections and budgets, and in global crises it has spiked far above its normal range, as in March 2020. It falls in calm, rising markets. Option premiums move with it, so when VIX is high, buying options is costly and selling them collects more but carries more risk. Traders use VIX as a temperature reading. A rising VIX with a falling Nifty confirms stress; a low VIX after a long rally can signal complacency. It is context, not a trade signal.
