Forex and currency
Exchange-traded futures and options on INR currency pairs such as USD/INR, the only legal way for Indian residents to trade forex.
Currency derivatives are futures and options contracts on exchange rates, traded on NSE, BSE and MCX-SX under SEBI and RBI rules. In India the contracts open to residents are INR pairs: USD/INR is the most active, with EUR/INR, GBP/INR and JPY/INR also listed. A USD/INR futures contract covers 1,000 US dollars, so at ₹84 the contract value is about ₹84,000, and the margin required is a small fraction of that. For Indian residents this is the only legal route to trade forex. Overseas forex brokers offering margin trading, and funding them through the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, are not permitted by RBI, and FEMA penalties can apply. Currency derivatives move in small units called pips, and while daily moves are usually small, leverage makes losses real. Check the current contract specifications and margin requirements on the exchange before trading.
